Contract: Data Label Analyst for Magnit Global @ Meta

In December of 2023, I had the opportunity to embark on one of the most fascinating and fun professional endeavors of my life. The opportunity called for English Majors who could demonstrate exceptional writing skills and a versatile range of writing styles, primarily technical writing. That opportunity was through Magnit Global, which would link me up with one of the largest tech giants in the world: Meta.

The Life of a DLA

My job as a Data Label Analyst required a daily hefty load of technical writing and ever-growing problem-solving scenarios. My job entailed analyzing huge data sets and then annotating (technical writing) those data sets so that they could be gathered for larger training sets. These training sets, once established, would eventually be fed into training Meta AI.

I got to see first-hand how the part I was playing—although a small part—would bring results as certain products and technological abilities became public. I also learned just how much work and how many people it took to power these technologies, which granted me newfound appreciation and understanding of Artificial Intelligence. As the months flew by and workflows closed, I found a level of fulfillment in my work that exceeded any expectations I had when I first started.

During my time as a DLA, I grew both as a writer and as a professional. I would sometimes write thousands of words a day, juggle several workflows at once, adapt to various UIs (User Interfaces), and work with huge teams of brilliant people, fellow DLAs, a plethora of PjMs (Project Managers), and, on many projects, several engineers. My key duties while working this contract include:

  • Provide Quality Assurance (QA) to ensure annotations meet both quality and company safety standards
  • Annotations and QA for Augmented Reality (AR), OCR (Optical Character Recognition), TTS (Text to Speech), Voice AI, and Generative AI
  • Contributions to several renowned products, such as Meta AI (LLM) and the Meta AI Ray-Ban Glasses (AR)
  • Highlight: While working on one product, I used technical immersive writing to create 1,087 annotations, with each annotation averaging 500 words
Take Away

In the end, I was proudly able to complete my 2-year contract limit that Meta allows for CWs (Contingent Workers). I am so grateful for this opportunity as it allowed me to grow as a writer, a professional, and a person.
