Case Study: FIREXSIDE Skateboards

FIREXSIDE is a grassroots skateboard brand that is deeply rooted in the Pacific Northwest. It first started as a clothing brand in 2016 and then went on to release skateboards in 2019. With a strong influence up and down the West Coast, and a presence in Colorado and the East Coast, FIREXSIDE pays tribute to the raw skateboard culture that can be found throughout rural regions across the United States.

I have been with this legacy brand since the beginning, during which I first focused my efforts on webpage copy for their new site and product descriptions for emerging soft good releases. However, as the company continued to grow and began creating skateboards, it also began building a skateboard team. My writing would play a big role in this newfound development, too.

FIREXSIDE Team Bios

What does every skateboard team absolutely need? Team bios. And that’s where I come in. For each team bio, I have crafted the writing to both reflect the brand’s unique voice while encapsulating the character and skill of each team rider.

Meet the FIREXSIDE Team!

Although I did not write all of the team bios, I wrote the great majority of them. Currently, you can find my writing for the following team bios: Sam Hatten, Bobby Dodd, Austin Iles, Cam Barret, Steve Perdue, Tyler Price, Jesse Erickson, Julian Quevedo, Brick Strait, Storm Fog, and the company’s founder, Adam Crew. I have a personal friendship with each of these individuals, so having the opportunity to write their stories was not just fun, it was an honor.

FIREXSIDE 6×6’s

One of FIREXSIDE’s early staples was—and still is—the 6×6, which is essentially mini-interviews with the team members. These short interviews consist of an introductory write-up of the team rider, which is then followed by six short questions and six answers from the interviewee.

The most recent 6×6 I wrote was with living Northwest legend, Brick Strait.

Working closely with the founder, Adam Crew, I craft each 6×6 to both introduce the audience to the skateboarder while tailoring questions that I find relevant to the interviewee’s interests, skateboarding, and personality. Thus far, I have written three 6×6’s with Brick Strait, Bobby Dodd, and Julian Quevedo.

Write-Ups

Currently, I only have one write-up live on the FIREXSIDE website, a short article titled Celebrating a Trio of Artistry: The Third Installment From Brandon Hurley.

Brandon Hurley Collab with FIREXSIDE Skateboards - Article by Travis Knight
Brandon Hurley’s third collaboration with FIREXSIDE, titled Freight.

LA-based artist, Brandon Hurley, has been collaborating with FIREXSIDE skateboards since the near beginning. His fine art painting has appeared on two classic decks: the Steve Perdue Roaring 20’s board and the Jesse Erickson tribute board, 24 Deep. In late 2025, the third collaboration with the artist, Freight, dropped in the FIREXSIDE Winter catalogue (my copy appeared in the latter, too). This write-up explores both the company’s history with the artist and the new Freight release.

My Work Today

Today, I continue to write bios for FIREXSIDE’s growing team. I also continue to contribute to the company’s signature 6×6 mini-interviews as they unfold, and other write-ups that align with FIREXSIDE’s releases, skate activity, and overall culture. Using Klaviyo, I also contribute copy to the company’s monthly newsletters.
